Background of the Satya Djaya Raya Foundation

The Satya Djaya Raya Foundation (YSDR) was established on March 26, 2012, by Osbert Lyman in response to the growing concern over the declining understanding of Indonesia's cultural heritage among younger generations. Many cultural traditions and legacies are recognized merely as symbols or customs, with little appreciation of the values and philosophies they embody.

Driven by this concern, YSDR was founded to preserve and reintroduce the deeper meaning of culture through education, the arts, social initiatives, and humanitarian efforts. The Foundation believes that cultural preservation cannot rely solely on ceremonial practices; it must be built upon meaningful understanding and sustained engagement.

Bali was chosen as the Foundation's center of operations because of its vibrant cultural ecosystem, supported by a thriving arts infrastructure, an open environment for dialogue, and a community that actively participates in cultural activities. These qualities make Bali an ideal setting for bringing together artists, academics, students, communities, and the public.

YSDR also carries forward the values passed down by the founder's family by encouraging collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders, particularly younger generations, so they can better understand and appreciate the importance of cultural heritage as an integral part of national identity.
